What was the story behind the Terracotta Warriors?
A Terracotta WarriorWhen Ying Zheng was almost murdered by the Yen (the state) subject with peace offerings, his dreams became nightmares. He dreamed about the souls which were killed by him in the past, which terrified his sleep. He thought that the souls will come back someday with revenge. He was scared so he needed something to protect him: the Terracotta warriors. The Terracotta Warriors or The Guardians of The Tomb (see below) was discovered by Chinese farmers when they were digging for water back in 1974.
The warriors gave the world a shock which made the archaeologists inspired about the emperor's ideas.
Rows and rows of soldiers lined up: each face was different and realistic. A pit of evidence was as large as two football pitches near Xi'an, which used to be the capital city for almost 2000 years. Archaeologists say that they've found more than 120 pits around the Tomb, which scientists and archaeologists still researching on.
One warrior was about 2 meters tall, not a human average height. These clay people were there to protect the emperor's tomb from other enemies 2000 years ago.

Why did the emperor need the Wall?
The Great Wall of ChinaLike the Terracotta Warriors, it was for protection. After he conquered all of China and defeated the Chu state, he called himself Qin Shi Huangdi (find out more about why the name changed in the Who was Qin Shi Huangdi? page) at the age of 34. But security of his country didn't seem to be enough for protecting him from enemies. So he decided to create another security system, which became 'The Great Wall of China'.
The Wall was massively large which took up over a million slaved citizens in 221 BC. The Wall was built bit by bit. The first part was completed in 206 BC and the other last parts took over 200 years to complete (eventually after the emperor's death). There were no other massive projects than this in ancient China. The Wall is around ten meters high and 5000 kilometers long. You can see it from outer space!

What was the Tomb?
The secret TombThe Tomb is one of China's biggest secrets. 1000 kilometers away from the Terracotta Warriors, there is a mountain around the size of the pyramids of Egypt. The secret was surrounded by liquid mercury deep in the Earth. The Tomb was sealed for over 2000 years but there was a secret way in. Archaeologists say that the emperor's subjtects were trapped in the Tomb, and had to die with the emperor. The Tomb a size of a football pitch. In 219 BC, the Tomb was complete and was finally used for the emperor's death (it was a grave). No one really knows if it really exists but the liquid mercury was still there. The Tomb is still a mystery to the world, the scientist and archaeologists still finding out about it. This Tomb was only a legend. This Tomb was featured in one of the famous Indiana Jones movies: Indiana Jones and the Emperor's Tomb.
